Republican congressmen have so far announced that they will not be running for re-election. One of those lawmakers, Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), complained "that the Democrats' new five-day workweek" is part of the reason they're all retiring:

"I do think the schedule and the flying is a huge pain for people, particularly those who are from the Midwest or even further West," he said, adding that it's "probably the worst part of the job."

"I think that has played into these retirement announcements," said the seven-term congressman from Peoria.

Poor thing has to work 5 whole days in a row and commute home (yes, I realize that Congresspersons work even when at home and have work to do in their districts, but geez his complaint sounds whiny, especially when thinking of all the people who work 2-3 jobs just to break even)

Wow JonesGirl,

You mean they'd have to work M-F like normal people? What a sacrifice! With the country in such poor shape they need to be working 7 days a week, with overtime.

Screw th' overtime; they've been complicit in th' demise of unions, let 'em work off th' clock like at Wal-Mart.

Does anyone know why the House of Representatives term is 2 years while the Senate is 6? When they first developed the government they thought that everyone should take their turn going to Washington for a BRIEF term of law making. The common farmer only had to serve for 2 years to meet his obligation while the large landowners went for 6 years. They were NOT supposed to LIVE in Washington. It was like military service, everyone was supposed to take their turn at sacrificing work on the farm for the better good.

How things have changed. One of the biggest is that Washington DC is no longer near the geographical center of the United States. There is a solution for this problem. Take one of the old Air Force bases in Kansas or Nebraska and build a new government center. It would make bombing the center of government far more difficult. The government would be more accessible to more of the population (a sure reason it will not happen).

The people in Congress should not be entitled to a life time job. It was never intended to BE a long term job.

Heaven forbid if the representatives actually spent TIME with their constituents more often than every election season. We might actually have a more reasoned and responsible government.

He's worried about his family life if he has to work five days per week? Hmmm. -- H RES 861: LaHood's vote pledged support for the War in Iraq and rejected a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Guess the soldiers' family lives don't matter a whit.

They also work less than our children in school
the house having only 95 days in session
the senate was a bit better at 132 days in session.

the submit about 3 bills an hour with only 4% becoming law.
normal people.. about 250 days.
the get paid an average of $165,200 with awesome benefits.
and it costs us about 1 million more for each congressmen to have staff.

there are about 535 members of congress
So thats $86.8 million to pay for the congress salaries plus another $535 million for their staff
plus more for research and everything else. But lets go conservative to make the math easy.
$600 million and they passed last year 200 laws.
So it is costing the american tax payer about $3 million per law passed.
I dont know about you but I want my 3 million dollars back.
I think we could get some illegals to do it for less than minimum wage.
and if they are good they get to stay in the country, if bad they get shot from a super cannon back to country of origin. You may think thats cruel but remember they are politicians.

When did the House or Senate initiate a 5 day work week? I know that was a promise by the Democrats, but in the first 100 days they were off on Fridays and most Thursdays.

They are lawyers and politicians not mathematicians and accountants. They are used to saying one thing when they really mean something completely and totally different.

Oh gimmie a break here! I have never heard such a flimsy story. Remember the DC Madam and Larry Flint's veiled threat to expose a bunch of Republicans? BINGO! Its all about the Clinton machine and BLACKMAIL! Just QUIT NOW OR ELSE! Or else WHAT? Or else we will EXPOSE you and whatever you may or may not be involved in! Don't try to tell me that its only Republicans who are suddenly worried about a 5 day work week! NAW! NOT FOR A MINUTE! ITS THE CLINTON MACHINE GRINDING EVERYONE UP AND SPITTIN' 'EM OUT! AND THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!
