Just for Fun: What would you do with $150,000?

advertisement

Much has been made of the incredible amount of money the RNC spent to wardrobe Palin and her children over the past few weeks, which has led me to daydream about what I would do with that same sum, were I to find it on the street.

I definitely wouldn't put it to clothes, I know how to dress well on a budget and refuse to pay full price for anything. Neiman is fun to walk through, but not really my style. My day to day work wardrobe of pants, shirts and the rare skirt I usually buy at Gap, Target (they have great bargains and cute stuff!) and even Old Navy. Shoes I do spluge on, mainly because I so rarely buy any (something it seems Obama and I share in common!)

I would absolutely use about a third of the largesse to pay off my student loan debt, thus giving someone at Sallie Mae a heart attack, given that I can barely pay the interest at the moment. My credit card debt would be vanquished, too. I might, might, buy a MINI Cooper, though I don't need a car. A top of the line MacBook. And I would send lavish, surprise gifts to close friends and family.

The rest would go into my rainy day fund.

So much to be done with all that money, it's a shame that Palin put it all to boring clothes.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Give $19,000 to programs here in the United States that help those in poverty get back on their feet by helping out with placing them in a job, home and offer courses in personal budgeting.

Pay off the $20-30,000 in debt we've acrued.

Use the rest for schooling, home payments and savings for our future children.

I did leave off charities...I'm not sure what charities I would donate to.

Maybe instead of a gift for friends and family, I'd take everyone on a cruise.

Well, I had $100k when Bush took office, then I was in an accident and couldn't work for a while and had medical bills.  I guess I'd save it for the next time we have a Republican president and I'm strapped for cash.

150K is a LOT of money.  I would probably give some to the after school music program I work with, and pay off some bills.  I'd save some for the kids, and maybe buy something I wouldn't normally buy for myself.  I can tell you this though, I would not step foot into Needless Markups.

No NM for me, either. I can barely fathom spending $100 for any piece of clothing (maybe for a special occasion dress, I would splurge a little), let alone the several hundred dollars anything at NM goes for!

After a complete wardrobe change, I don't really know what I would do with the other 149,000.  Guess I would probably have to let the wife buy something new, althrough I don't know why, she looks good in whatever she wears.

I'm constantly envious of men's clothes, Roger. Even for say, a wedding--you men can trot out a suit, a nice shirt and a tie and be done with it. We female types have to find a dress, and shoes, and possibly nylons...ugh.

Same for workday clothes. My current job is business casual, so suits are out, but that almost makes it more difficult to dress each day. At least when I wore suits, it didn't require much thought. I went to Catholic school, so I became used to the luxury of a uniform, which really cuts down on dressing time.

I went the aftershave route, and couldn't keep the women away, which wsn't a problem for me, but the wife got kinda angry.  The day spa thing doesn't sound bad through.

Make some repairs and maintenance on our house--$10,000.  Pay off my mortgage--$80,000.  Go visit my daughter in Idaho--$1000.  Go visit my grandson in Virginia--$800.  Buy some things for the soon to be granddaughter--$200. Put the rest in savings--$58000 for travel and gifts later.

I dunno about the bit o' heaven part of Spikgarys pics of Adirondacks haven, The link provided up above will show you it's a desert area of Wyoming with scrubrush and free-roaming herds of animals.

It's hot in summer. It's cold in winter. and it's several hundrd miles away from the border patrol and their "No Constitution Free Zone"

Books are welcome, don't forget to bring CD's and DVD's and a Hughesnet connection - winters can be deep.

For a mere $5K, one can buy/donate The Heifer Gift Ark and make a huge difference in some lives with a donation to Heifer International at http://www.heifer.org/. Five thou will buy 15 pairs of animals (ducks, geese, sheep, water buffaloes, camels sheep, cows, etc etc).

Only $145 thou more. Hmm. Well, for $100 or so I could buy and donate a bunch of toys to poor kids who will really appreciate them.

I could use some new walking shoes. I would like a better apartment, with built-in washer-dryer. Maybe start my own business(?), since loans are drying up for everything. Most of my bills get paid off in full each month, so I am not carrying a whole lot of debt due right now. Do not want a house -- can't handle the upkeep and all the headaches a house brings with it. Could maybe splurge a thou on clothes or whatnot, maybe a couple thou on trips to wherever for the winter...Maybe visit a couple NV friends for a day?

A washer/dryer! Yes. YES. My friends can't believe that I want a washer/dryer more than a car, more than a perfect kitchen. Give me a washer/dryer so I can do laundry without trekking to my building's laundry room.

And I agree on the house...I might be not getting anything with renting, but I don't have to stress about repairs.

The Gift Ark sounds awesome, I might suggest that to my employer as a corporate donation for the holidays.

Yeah, I'd postpone my suicide too.  Pay off my debts and credit card approx. $18,500.  Pay off my car $6,500.  Sell my house for whatever I could get since I'm almost in foreclosure.  I'd downsize my life to a small apartment.  I'd pay my sister back some money she loaned me.  (Hey, I wasn't ever a debtor until I got too sick to work for a living).  Then I'd try to use some of the money to help other people going through the tough financial times, foreclosures, homeless.  That's about all...I'm too sick to really do anything else.  It's fun to think about something positive for a change.

    If you're speaking about Palin

She said those close she wears go to charity, the close are not hers.

    Stop causing trouble.

Well, the facts are showing now that Sarah Palin did not visit the store, others in the RNC went shopping for her.

Sarah had a pimp daddy pay for them and now they're debating who gets the tax deduction if they're donated to charity.

BTW, I think the red leather jacket looked better on Michael Jackson in the 80's.

Oh, please. Peggy Noonan and Maureen Dowd that are getting old prunes and not having been in the spotlight for a long time and for sure the red jacket that the Governor was wearing would not look good on them.

Michael Jackson? I don't remember him.

No more  credit card debt, really nice photography equipment to start my business with, and then I would travel for three years working on my portfolio.  God that would be fantastic.

pay off IRS, credit cards and car loan, buy some land in the mountains and spend a bunch on the grandkids, save the rest or maybe invest some in our home business, depending on the state of the economy

Getting my family back to visit friends in the Middle East country that we lived during 26 years, in first class, with the help of the travel points in my charge card.  My kids grew up there and we keep warm memories.

I would pay off my debts
I would give $20000 to Kiva in microloans to help others
I would treat all my famility and there are lots of them to a holiday in the sun and with what was left I would throw a huge party for friends and family just for the heck of it!

and by the way I think it is obscene the amount that gets spent on clothes and make up etc by so called celebrities - thats why they lose touch so quickly with the average person.
